Siyabulela Mdoda (“Siya”) is a self-trained, young South African impressionist artist born in the Eastern Cape and boasting a reputation as one of the country’s most highly
recommended artists living in the rural areas. Siya works in a range of mixed media approaches, experimenting with sculpture, painting, ceramic art, mosaic art, murals and glass
melting, making use of waste material and subject matter consisting of a wide array of vibrant concepts surrounding the dynamics of life in rural and semi-urban South Africa.
Siya has made a name for himself exhibiting and selling his work at various national and provincial festivals around the country, as well as at high profile events and shows, gaining him recognition as the best-selling artist on site for the Authentic Collections Art Gallery in 2006.
Over the last 8 years, he has lived in Johannesburg and in Cape Town, working individually and with various other artists, where he believes he has managed to build an unchallenged base of clients and now currently works out of his own makeshift art studio at his home in Mount Coke Mission in King William’s Town.
From his experiences as a travelling artist, he has also collaborated with various overseas artists such as Paul Stopforth.
Siya has returned home to pursue the realization of a vision of bringing the art of South Africa to its people. A vision which he hopes to achieve by providing personal and specific art education to the people by not only assembling a team of artists to work individually with the people, but also by giving people an opportunity to learn from the value which he himself attaches to each work of art through a series of workshops designed to allow people to interact with the artists and their work.
His work is guided by a philosophy of open participation, democracy and Ubuntu which foster the spirit of sharing, carrying, constructive criticism and gender sensitivity in a multi-cultural environment. He believes in empowerment of people with self-identity, challenges and subscribe to Charter of Ethical Practice for Applied visual arts Practice
